Opening Reception: Saturday, February 28 | 1–5 PM

This spring, The Orchard Galleries presents three dynamic exhibitions celebrating nationally recognized artists and the breadth of contemporary practice.

A solo retrospective of the 50-year national career of Bella Feldman. Bella Tabak Feldman (1930–2024) was an American sculptor and installation artist whose work merged steel, glass, and wood into psychologically charged, often surreal forms that probe themes of war, sexuality, vulnerability, and the anxieties of the industrial age. A pioneering woman in sculpture and a Professor Emerita at California College of the Arts in Oakland, she is widely recognized for innovating techniques that combine blown glass with fabricated metal, producing works that are at once physically imposing and emotionally fragile.

In collaboration with Gray Loft Uptown, 18 artists from The Art of the African Diaspora—the Richmond Art Center’s celebrated annual exhibition—will present a vibrant group show at The Orchard Galleries. This special presentation brings together a powerful cross-section of contemporary Bay Area artists whose work reflects the richness, complexity, and global reach of the African Diaspora.

Nationally recognized metal sculptor Joseph Slusky is showing a selection of recent and past work. He is best known for his whimsical painted metal sculptures made from recycled scrap metal. Influences include metal toys, LA car culture, Constructivism and other twentieth century art movements. The sculptures explore realms of the subconscious and are fossilizations of the imagination. Joe taught drawing and three-dimensional design UC Berkeley’s Architecture Department for thirty-two years.

The Orchard Galleries, opened in November 2025, is Oakland’s newest addition to the city’s energetic and evolving art scene.

Art of the African Diaspora 2026

Now in its 29th year, Art of the African Diaspora continues to put a spotlight on the creativity of artists of African descent. This year, more than 150 artists are sharing their work at Richmond Art Center, as well as through open studios and satellite exhibitions throughout the Bay Area.

Curated by Jan Watten, founder of Gray Loft Gallery, this exhibition features 18 artists selected from the Richmond Art Center’s AOTAD roster, all of whom live and work in the Bay Area.
